HowTo Enable Inband Management on Mellanox Ethernet Switches

    This post shows how to enable inband management on Mellanox Ethernet switches. Inband Management is the ability to manage the switch via the 40/56 GbE interface, and in various environments, inband management may be an alternative way to manage the switch.

    Setup

    A basic setup with one server connected to the switch on the 40/56GbE ports (untagged).

     

    Make sure that the server port that connected to the switch is configured with an IP within the proper subnet.

    For example, assuming the network 11.11.11.0/24.

    # ifconfig eth2 11.11.11.1/24 up

     

    Configuration

    Inband management can be enabled with or without IP routing enabled.

     

    Inband Management configuration - option 1: IP routing is disabled (L2)

     

    1. Disable IP routing

    switch (config) # no ip routing

     

    2. Make sure that the switch port (e.g. 1/1) is swichport access the PVID is qual to 1.

    switch (config) # interface ethernet 1/1 switchport mode access

    switch (config) # interface ethernet 1/1 switchport access vlan 1

     

    Note, by default, untagged traffic is mapped to VLAN 1, in case no VLAN is used create interface VLAN 1.

     

    3. Create VLAN interface on the desired network.

    switch (config) # interface vlan 1

     

    4. Assign IP address for the VLAN interface.

    switch (config) # interface vlan 1 ip address 11.11.11.100 /24

     

    5. Save the configuration.

    switch (config) # configuration write

    Inband Management configuration - option 2: IP routing is enabled (L3)

     

    1. Enable IP routing

    switch (config) # ip routing

     

    2. Make sure that the switch port (e.g. 1/1) is swichport access the PVID is qual to 1.

    switch (config) # interface ethernet 1/1 switchport mode access

    switch (config) # interface ethernet 1/1 switchport access vlan 1

    3. Create VLAN interface on the desired network.

    switch (config) # interface vlan 1

    4. Assign IP address for the VLAN interface.

    5. Save the configuration.

    switch (config) # configuration write

     

    Verification

    1. Make sure that the relevant switch port is in UP state.

    2. Check IP connectivity (e.g. ping)

    3. Run SSH to connect to the switch using the configured IP and subnet.

     

    # ssh admin@11.11.11.100
