There have been a spate of datacenter interconnect acquisitions over the past few years, and competitive pressure is mounting. The latest deal reflects a recent increase in M&A activity focused on silicon photonics, a new technology expected to change the economics of optical interconnects. On May 15, Mellanox Technologies announced an agreement to acquire Kotura, a Sunnyvale, California-based startup that already has some telecom-related silicon photonic products out on the market. Mellanox plans to use Kotura's technology and patents to build end-to-end interconnects for datacenters, supporting enhanced data rate (EDR) InfiniBand and 100Gbps Ethernet protocols. Those products are due to reach the market in 2014-2015.
